The mission of Christ Church is rooted in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We strive to provide an affirming evangelical and sacramental presence to everyone in their diversity and, therefore, we are called to ministries that are loving, inclusive and justice bearing.

It is paramount to our faith that we develop a personal relationship with our Lord and not just simply a theoretical or intellectual understanding. The Church is our primary dispenser of nourishment for that relationship.

The Church, referred to in Holy Scripture as founded by Jesus Christ, who is its only high priest, exists for the glory of God. Worshipping in community is how we put purpose in our lives. This is achieved by preaching the good news of salvation, calling the faithful to worship and prayer, administering the sacraments with regular celebration of the Holy Eucharist and forgiving sins, and caring for the troubled and needy.

What is “Old Catholicism”?

We know from history that the Church founded by our Lord Jesus Christ was united for a thousand years. Today, however the Catholic church is comprised of five sister congregations:
  • Roman Catholic
  • Old Catholic
  • Anglican Catholic/Episcopalian
  • Eastern Catholic (or Eastern Orthodox)
  • Oriental (Coptic, Syrian, Nestorian)
These sister churches, together relating to each other in love, hold that through baptism, celebrated in our churches according to the faith handed down to us from the Apostles, we are each made members of the one mystical body of Christ.

For the most part, our sister churches interpret God’s plan of salvation essentially the same. But, like all sisters in a family, there are differences—mostly administrative and disciplinary, as well as some theological.

Christ Church Glenn Dale recognizes the clergy and Eurcharist of all four of her sisters. The tradition of the Old Catholic Church comes from scripture, the Ecumenical Councils of the early undivided church and the teachings of the early church fathers and of all the saints, inspired by the Holy Spirit, from our Lord’s time on earth to the present.

We began as Roman Catholics. In 1870, the proposed dogma of papal infallibility was one of the subjects of a meeting of Roman Catholic Bishops. There was considerable dissent among the bishops to the idea of papal infallibility, especially among bishops from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The dissenters held that the Church is infallible when in General Council (as the early Church believed), but that the Pope, when acting alone in matters of faith and morals, was not. Many of the dissenting bishops went on to form communities independent of Rome. These took the name "Old Catholic" because they sought to adhere to the beliefs and practices of the Catholic (universal) Church of the Apostolic Era prior to 1054.

The Old Catholics are a body of Christians committed to the Person of Jesus Christ and His teaching. We accept and believe the testimony of the apostles, eyewitnesses of His life, death, and resurrection from the dead. The apostles passed on to succeeding generations their own testimony about Jesus Christ and His life. By proclaiming the Gospel and giving their own.
